Sachin 200 … Truly The Greatest
Thursday 25, February 2010

Sachin Tendulkar continues to surprise all of us. If we thought his recent trot of 4 Test centuries would satisfy him, he produces yet another masterpiece and breaks Saeed Anwar’s ( and Coventry) record 0f 194 and has the unique distinction of scoring the first double century in One Day internationals.

The first ODI century was scored by Dennis Amiss of England on Aug 24 1972 against Australia, at Old Trafford. It took 37 and half years for the first ODI double century to be registered on Feb 24 2010 by Sachin for India against South Africa at Gwalior.

If i were a cricket player…
Tuesday 16, February 2010

… I would definitely be a fast bowler. The image of a young man, raw, spirited, full of energy and passion, at the start of his run-up is simply fascinating. Eyes burning, muscles swinging, this young man carries with him not only his own dreams but the hope of the other young men of his team. Many times, he is solely responsible for the hopes of men and women, young and old, of his country.
Fingers twisting, muscles tightening, he is ready for the lengthy movement towards the individual waiting for his leather. His mind is racing down the track, his body to follow shortly. The corner of his lips turned slightly upward, he leans forward. Ball firmly clasped, he starts to move forward, pace building, moving towards the kill. He jumps in the air and hurtles the object. As he lands, he laughs like a child that has gotten the toy so desperately desired, just a second ago.
Bathed in sweat, hands limp by his side, head down, shoulders erect, he slowly walks back to create, yet again, another of his magical moments.

Alterations Afridi Style
Tuesday 16, February 2010

Flamboyant Shahid Afridi always manages to hit the headlines by pulverizing the ball with his bat normally, but recently his teeth were in play as well.

The well publicized episode where he was caught tampering the ball by biting it, has had its share of brickbats and hand wringing.

Pakistani politicians now want a bigger ban on Afridi for having let down Pakistan’s “izzat”.

Whereas India’s most celebrated commentator Harsha Bhogle had a different take, he wondered whether certain rules needed review.

http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/446934.html

Amongst all this hullabaloo, former Test opener Aakash Chopra had a very interesting piece about the hows and whys of ball tampering.

http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/447730.html

Given that ball tampering and gamesmanship has been there for ages, one cannot take a holier than thou attitude and be moralistic.  There are various shades of gray involved, individual Umpires need to state clearly what they consider “allowable” and implement it consistently. Even in the NBA, referees make individual judgments about allowable contact and fouls. The good ones earning the players respect, are those who stick to the same definition throughout the match.
